Let’s start with some numbers
The Excel series was first released in April 1998 with more than 200 orders already made. Cessna manufacturer has given the original Citation Excel a couple of makeovers along the years and released the upgraded versions under the names XLS and XLS+. All 3 versions are extremely reliable midsize business jet. A brand new XLS has a fairly low buying price of about 12 million dollars.
The length of these jets is on average 52.6 feet; their width is 56.4 feet and their height 17.2 feet. The cabin is 18.6 feet long and 5.5 feet wide. Inside, you have 5.8 feet of headroom which is enough for most people to stand up.
The maximum fuel capacity of the aircrafts is 6740 pounds. The Excel series empty weight is 12800 pounds. As a maximum it can take of as heavy as 20200 pounds. It is equipped with two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545C turbofans which are capable of 4119 pounds of thrust each. They allow the Excel series reach its maximum operating altitude of 45000 feet in only 29 minutes.
The Excel, XLS and XLS+ can land on runways 3180 feet long after flying for more than 4 hours. Its maximum range is 2111 nautical miles and max speed 484 knots.
Cessna has equipped the Excel series with Honeywell Primus 1000 EFIS avionics. This glass cockpit system (LED displays rather than mechanical indicators) is designed with ergonomy and practicality at heart. Clumsy switches were replaced by illuminated buttons organized logically and LED displays make information reading (weather, checklists, diagnostics, flight data etc.) much easier for the pilots. They also installed a TCAS 4000 system that can track other aircrafts within a 35 mile radius for increased safety.
The cockpit has room for two pilots and cannot accommodate a third one. The cabin can accommodate 6 people in full reclining seats plus two on a side facing couch located behind the cockpit. It is worth noting that this is one of the few aircrafts that never had any fatalities.
Travelling in a Cessna Citation Excel
The Excel series cabin can be adapted to fit your needs or your tastes. The most common configuration is the business configuration which is very comfortable for 6 to 8 passengers. However, it is possible to charter up to 10 passengers in a tighter configuration.
The leather seats on the Excel, XLS and XLS+ recline completely, turning into comfortable matresses for a good night’s sleep. As you can see in the pictures below, different collections are available to accommodate your tastes. The air conditioning and pressurization will help you fly in comfortable conditions from the very beginning of your flight (the APU can power the air conditioning even on the ground). Different configurations can be chosen to provide you with closets, refreshment centres, moving map displays and entertainment systems.
